Job Description
The Vice President & Counsel, Public Policy is CJAC’s principal lobbyist and is responsible for leading and executing CJAC’s legislative advocacy program. The position reports to CJAC’s president and chief executive officer and is based in Sacramento, California.
Primary job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and execute CJAC’s legislative strategy and priorities.
- Advocate directly with members of the Legislature and the Executive branch on CJAC legislative and other public policy priorities.
- Research and analyze proposed California legislation for civil liability impacts.
- Prepare position letters, fact sheets, and other advocacy materials.
- Collaborate with CJAC member and partner organizations and stakeholder groups.
- Testify before Legislative committees and administrative agencies.
- Develop and lead coalitions to support or oppose legislation.
- Draft bill language and proposed amendments.
- Lead CJAC Legislative Committee bill review and positioning.
- Report and provide updates to CJAC board and members on legislation.
- Assist with CJAC member recruitment and fundraising efforts.
- Represent CJAC at policy conferences and public and political functions.
Job Qualifications
The ideal job candidate will have:
- A California legal license.
- Litigation experience of at least 5 years.
- California legislative experience.
- Capacity to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- An orientation for people and relationship-building.
- Ability to explain complex legal issues.
- Strong work ethic and drive.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
