Legislative Advocate

Founded in 1979, CJAC is the only statewide association dedicated solely to improving California’s civil liability system through education and advocacy in the Legislature, the courts, and our communities. Our mission is to protect Californians from unwarranted and excessive litigation that discourages innovation, eliminates jobs, and drives up the costs of goods and services.
CJAC’s board of directors, membership, and stakeholders consist of California businesses from a broad cross-section of industries.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Legislative Advocate is CJAC’s principal lobbyist and is responsible for leading and executing CJAC’s legislative advocacy program. The position reports to CJAC’s president and is based in Sacramento, California. Some travel is required.
Primary job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Develop CJAC’s legislative and regulatory strategy and priorities.
- Analyze proposed California legislation and obtain feedback from CJAC member organizations and stakeholder groups on civil liability impacts.
- Lead CJAC’s Legislative Committee on bill-review and positioning.
- Advocate/educate to the Legislature, Executive branch, and their respective staff on CJAC member perspectives on legislative proposals.
- Prepare position letters, fact sheets, and other advocacy materials.
- Testify before Legislative committees and administrative agencies.
- Develop and lead coalitions to support or oppose legislation.
- Draft legislative and regulatory proposals or amendments.
- Report legislative updates to CJAC board and member companies, as well as local, state, and national partner organizations.
- Actively promote CJAC, recruit new members, and participate in fundraising activities.
- Represent CJAC at state and national policy conferences and public and political functions.
Desired Qualifications
The ideal job candidate will have:
- A California legal license.
- A passion for public policy and legal reform.
- Legal practice experience.
- California legislative advocacy experience.
- Experience coalition-building, leading and collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
- The capacity to manage multi-part, ongoing projects in a fast-paced environment.
- An orientation for people and relationship-building.
- The ability to analyze complex legal issues and effectively communicate them to legal and non-legal audiences.
- Strong work ethic and drive.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
