"For the fourth year in a row, California's business leaders have identified the state's liability laws as the leading negative drag on our economy. This is a situation that well preceded the trial lawyers' propositions [211 and 207] on the November ballot and, unfortunately, will continue as a major problem until the Legislature steps in with some balanced reforms," said John H. Sullivan, president of the Civil Justice Association of California.
"Over the past two years, we've seen 30 states enact solid civil justice reforms. Ohio and Pennsylvania joined the list within the past several weeks. It seems like every month California becomes more isolated as a state failing to act.
"In defeating both propositions 207 and 211 by overwhelming margins, the voters made it clear they want the legal system to operate fairly, not as an income-producer for lawyers filing frivolous lawsuits. We hope the new Legislature will reflect that attitude as well in the coming months."
The Civil Justice Association of California (CJAC) is a coalition of citizens, taxpayers, businesses, local governments, professionals, insurance companies, and medical organizations. Founded in 1978, as the Association of California Tort Reform, Civil Justice Association of California is the only statewide association dedicated solely to improving California's civil liability system. It is active in both the Legislature and the courts, working to reduce the excessive and unwarranted litigation that drives up the cost of goods and services to all Californians.
