Name Change More Accurately Reflects Association Mission

SACRAMENTO - The Association for California Tort Reform, the statewide advocacy group dedicated to reforming liability laws and achieving a fairer civil justice system, today announced it has changed its name to the Civil Justice Association of California.

"In recent years we have expanded our work to cover civil justice issues beyond tort law and to cope with the increasing influence of contingency fee lawyers and their political agenda," said John H. Sullivan, president of the Association. "Our new name more accurately reflects our broad mission as an organization that performs credible, quality advocacy, research, and appellate work to benefit our members and the general public."

The Civil Justice Association of California is currently working with legislators and the administration to support much-needed reform of the Unfair Competition Law, to enact responsible Year 2000 liability laws, and gain passage of legislation to reduce construction litigation that is hurting home building in the state. The Association is opposing reinstating third-party "bad faith" insurance litigation, health care liability proposals, and pro-litigation bills in the employment area that would negatively impact consumers, local governments, taxpayers and businesses throughout the state.

The Civil Justice Association of California is a coalition of citizens, taxpayers, businesses, local governments, professionals, manufacturers, financial institutions, insurers and medical organizations. Founded in 1979, the Association is the only statewide association dedicated solely to improving California¨s civil liability system.
