Governor Jerry Brown released his proposed 2013-14 budget today, and while it was good to see that the administration avoided taking any more from the trial court reserve funds, it would take an additional $200 million from court construction funds.

No New Cuts to Courts in Governor's Proposed Budget – As Long As Tax Initiative Passes

Governor Jerry Brown’s 2012-13 budget was unexpectedly released yesterday, and after drastic cuts in each of the last three years, the judicial branch is not a part of any new cuts for now. However, that’s all dependent on California voters approving the governor's plan to temporarily raise income and sales taxes in November.

Hearings on California's Civil Justice Crisis

The first of four hearings across California to highlight the impact of the state court budget cuts will take place tomorrow in Sacramento. The California Commission on Access to Justice, the State Bar of California, and the California Chamber of Commerce have joined together to co-sponsor the hearings, which will show how cuts in funding for the courts and legal services threaten efficient and effective use of taxpayer dollars and the protection of rights and equal treatment under the law.
