Legislative Aide

The Civil Justice Association of California (CJAC) seeks a dynamic, highly motivated individual for an entry to mid-level, legislative assistant position. CJAC is a Sacramento-based non-profit, membership-supported association that works in the Legislature and the courts to reduce excessive and unwarranted litigation in the State of California. This position is ideal for recent college graduates who have research experience with interest in politics and the California legislative process.

The Legislative Aide assists and directly reports to the CJAC Vice President of Government Affairs on the day-to-day operation of CJAC’s Government Affairs Unit. The Legislative Aide provides administrative support by conducting research on topics of importance to CJAC, tracking legislation, assisting in lobbying efforts, overseeing legislative reports, and maintaining legislative folders and website.

Duties and Responsibilities

Support Vice President of Government Affairs

  • Initiate and assist in tracking legislation, overseeing legislative reports and issue coalitions.
  • Track, prepare, maintain, and distribute position letters on legislation.
  • Set up and calendar legislative meetings at the request of the Legislative Director and President.
  • Maintain legislative bill files and keep website up to date.
  • Prepare background information on sponsored legislation.
  • Prepare independent analysis of legislation at the direction of the Legislative Director.
  • Organize and distribute weekly legislative newsletter.
  • Attend Legislative Committee Hearings at direction of Vice President of Government Affairs.
  • Monitor Legislative Committee Hearings.
  • Attend meetings of stakeholders on legislation when needed.
  • Assist in preparation of Lobbyist Employer reports for California Secretary of State.
  • Coordinate Government Affairs staff travel as directed.
  • Manage Vice President of Government Affairs’ calendar.

Research

  • Read all bills introduced in legislative session.
  • Research case law, statutes and relevant regulations on civil justice issues as directed.
  • Research and look for studies, statistics or other relevant factual basis for supporting or opposing a piece of legislation.
  • Evaluate legislative impact on existing law.
  • Research legal issues.

Other Duties

  • Coordinate and plan CJAC legislative events in consultation with President and Legislative Director.
  • Attend Sacramento meetings and events as required, including a limited number of evening receptions.
  • Assist with preparation for board meetings.
  • Assist with research projects as directed.
  • Serve as back up for CJAC’s administrative staff team, including answering phones and other administrative tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of California legislative procedures and deadlines
  • Proficiency in Internet research including Westlaw and Lexis, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in the California State political and legal system.
