Legislative Advocate

The Civil Justice Association of California (CJAC) seeks a dynamic, highly motivated individual for an entry-level legislative advocate position. CJAC is a Sacramento-based non-profit, membership-supported association that works in both the Legislature and the courts to reduce excessive and unwarranted litigation in the State of California.

The Legislative Advocate assists and directly reports to the CJAC Vice President of Government Affairs on the day-to-day operation of CJAC’s Government Affairs Unit. The Legislative Advocate is responsible for conducting research on issues of importance to CJAC, tracking legislation and court-related activity, lobbying, preparing legislative reports, and representing CJAC at legislative, charitable and political functions when needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help establish and define legislative priorities
  • Review and analyze bills for civil liability implications. Update CJAC member organizations regarding implications of proposed legislation
  • Prepare arguments and collect statistical data to support CJAC’s legislative program
  • Draft legislative proposals and coordinate with legal experts to determine language for any proposed legislation and amendments
  • Participate with national coalitions on key legislation and communicate as appropriate with members of the California Congressional delegation.
  • Maintain liaison with Judicial Council and review Judicial Council proposals.
  • Communicate on a weekly basis with CJAC membership on legislative developments.
  • Communicate with CJAC member organizations, members of the public and other interested parties on liability and other civil law issues.
  • Represent CJAC at public and political functions as appropriate.
  • Track legislation and oversee legislative reports.
  • Prepare, maintain and distribute position letters on legislation.
  • Conduct research on bills and assist in writing position letters.
  • Analyze case law, statutes and relevant regulations on civil justice issues.
  • Identify studies, statistics or other relevant supporting materials for CJAC legislative positions.


  • Legal experience and/or JD preferred.
  • Experience working in the California legislature.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Experience with legal research and writing.
